Paralysing Overwhelm

That feeling when... everything piles up and you feel stuck

There are times when tasks don’t just add up, they snowball. You can see everything that needs doing. You know you’re capable. You know you have the skills, the time and the awareness available somewhere. And yet… nothing moves.

It’s a strange kind of stuckness: capacity isn’t the issue, and neither is the need. Instead, there’s a barrier, invisible at first, that grows heavier and more solid the longer those tasks sit untouched. Before you know it, the overwhelm overtakes everything and now you’re not just behind - you’re completely frozen.

For many anxious people and lots of people with neurodiversity, especially those with ADHD, this experience is incredibly common. It’s not laziness. It’s not a lack of willpower. It’s a real, lived barrier that can make even simple tasks feel impossible once the overwhelm kicks in.

If you’ve noticed this happening again and again, it might be worth exploring what’s underneath it. Sometimes the barrier is emotional. Sometimes it’s cognitive. Sometimes it’s a protective response that once served you but now keeps you from moving forward.

Therapy offers a space to gently unpack what’s going on — without judgement, without pressure, and without the expectation that you should already have it figured out. It's possible to explore what’s keeping you stuck and begin building ways to move through it rather than getting buried beneath it.

You don’t have to navigate this alone.
