A lot of the conversation around therapy talks about what is discussed in it - the issues, the pain, the work. Those elements are incredibly important to outline, because the work is hard is hard and underselling that would be an injustice. However... the thing that quite often gets over looked is what it is possible as a result of the work.
Therapy is not a silver bullet - it will not get rid of every bad feeling you might ever have, in fact getting rid of emotions is not the point at all. What therapy should be able to do is start make the overwhelming emotions more manageable and provide you with tools and understanding to deal more effectively with those feelings when they come up though.
In acknowledging the feelings, recognising how they affect you and preparing for their impact, the control and power shifts in your favour.
This is then true not only of the negative emotions (where so much attention and focus is usually given) but also of the positive ones. Joy and pride and curiosity and confidence and acceptance and peace also become not only possible, but powerful.
The whole range of emotions being available means the highs are available to be experienced, and so are the lows, but you will be equipped with the tools and the power to deal with their impact.
I don't want to undersell it, and I speak from personal experience here - the work is hard and what constitutes success differs for every individual (and at every session) - but if the possibility of being able to face adversity and truly feel joy as you move through the world is possible - for me that has made the work worthwhile.
